Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint
disease involving the break-down of cartilage in one’s joint. It is
experienced as stiffness, particularly in the morning or in damp weather, or
pain the in joints. Generally, there is no swelling of the joints associated
with it. Osteoarthritis is the oldest and most common form of arthritis
affecting as many as 20 million Americans. It tends to affect people over 45
years old. It has a higher frequency in men under 45 and in women over 45
(National Institutes of Health).
Cartilage, (smooth, soft, pearly-like
tissue) covers the end of bone surfaces to help two bones slide during
movement. When cartilage becomes thin and worn away in a joint, the bones rub
together. As a result people can feel pain and stiffness. This condition
usually affects weight-bearing joints such as knees or hips but can also be
found in finger joints, neck and lower back. While there is no known cure for
osteoarthritis, sufferers get varying degrees of relief form drugs, surgery and
alternative treatments. This site promotes alternative and all natural
treatments.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis is a
degenerative joint disease where the synovium, a protective capsule surrounding
the bone cartilage, becomes inflamed resulting in pain, swelling, stiffness, and
loss of function. This inflammation is an auto-immune response and can lead to
erosion of the cartilage and underlying bone. It typically affects fingers and
wrists but can also affect elbows and knees in what is known as a symmetrical
pattern: if one joint i.e., the knee has it then the other will likely have it
as well. Other symptoms include:
-
Swollen joints
-
Tenderness or
“warmth” in the joints
-
Inflammation in the
joints
-
Pain or stiffness
in the morning, after sleeping or in damp weather
-
Fatigue, occasional
fevers, a general sense of not feeling well
Like osteoarthritis, there is no known cure
but there are a variety of treatments, both conventional and alternative.
