Sleep Apnea

About Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is condition whose main symptoms are irregular breathing during sleep.  It is considered a serious condition and people who experience it should seek medical attention.

According to the America Sleep Apnea Association, there are three types of sleep apnea:  central, obstructive, and mixed. The most common type is obstructive.  It is characterized by obstruction of air flow into or out of the person’s nose or mouth.   (http://www.sleepapnea.org/geninfo.html#defined). Central sleep apnea,  as a result of the brain failing to send signals to initiate action of the muscles associated breathing.  According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), central sleep apnea is a rare condition.

The potential consequences of untreated sleep apnea (according to the NIH) include higher risk for:

Ø      Heart disease

Ø      Heart attack

Ø      Stroke

Ø      Accidents – work, driving or home

Symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea include the following, however it should be noted that not all sufferers may experience all symptoms or specific symptoms all of the time

Ø      Daytime dozing or fighting off sleep

Ø      Loud snoring

Ø      Choking sensations

Ø      Morning headache

Ø      Memory loss

Ø      Irritability

Sleep Apnea Treatment

If you or a family member suspects that you may have sleep apnea, see your health care provider immediately for diagnosis and treatment.

In many cases sleep apnea can be treated and sufferers can live a normal life.  Mild cases may be treated by weight loss, avoidance of alcohol consumption, elimination of smoking, sleeping on your side instead of your back, avoidance of sleeping pills.

More rigorous treatments include continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP).  This involves the use of a mask and device while sleeping, in which air is forced into the airway passage.  For more information go the National Sleep Foundation web site:

http://www.sleepfoundation.org/publications/sleepap.cfm#5

Surgery is also a potential treatment for person diagnosed with airway obstructions.

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)

RLS is a neurological disorder. More than 12 million Americans suffer from RLS. The condition typically affects middle-aged and older people, tending to increase in severity with aging. Symptoms are generally experienced while sitting or lying down. As a result, RLS can interfere with quality of life by disrupting sleep, work, and leisure.

Symptoms include unpleasant sensations like burning or tugging in the legs and an uncontrollable urge to move when at rest. These symptoms most commonly occur between the knee and the ankle, but have also been reported in the thighs, arms, feet, and hands. The cause of RLS is largely unknown. Some factors that have been attributed to the condition include: low levels of iron in the blood, chronic diseases such as kidney failure and diabetes, pregnancy, and certain medications.

For detailed information about the symptoms, treatments, including all-natural and alternative treatments, and ways to protect yourself from RLS distress,  please refer to the book: Stopping Restless Legs Syndrome.  It explains all-natural, alternative, and medical remedies that can bring fast relief without the use of potentially dangerous drugs.
