About Varicose Veins
Varicose veins are often classified by the presence of twisted, bulging blue
or purple lines running down part or all of the leg. Varicose veins are thought
to be related to defective valves in the circulatory system, or weakened or
stretched vein walls. Varicose veins typically occur when the veins are unable
to keep blood flowing against gravity and back up toward the heart. It is estimated
that 41% of all women will suffer from abnormal leg veins by the time they are
in the 50s. Almost one in four women suffer from varicose veins.
Varicose veins can be uncomfortable and cosmetically
displeasing. They typically worsen over time. Symptoms can include swelling
of the veins above the skin surface, swelling of the legs and feet, or
a burning and itching sensation on the skin. While not common, severe
leg pain, leg muscle fatigue or a throbbing sensation and cramping can
occur. Genetics, aging, and hormone changes all play a role in developing
varicose veins Legs can become painful, tired, or weak. Varicose veins
